Obituary for Eric Buel

Alburgh:

Eric Buel, 64, of Alburgh, VT, formerly of Middlesex, VT, died April 5, 2018, at the UVM Medical Center following a long battle with lymphoma.

Eric was born October 12, 1953 in Milford, DE, son of the late Josephine (Berretta) and John Walter Buel. He attended The University of Delaware (class of 1975), where he met his wife of 41 years, Laura (Wheeler) Buel.

After spending time in Missouri where Eric attended graduate school at University of Missouri-Kansas City graduating with a PhD in Chemistry in 1979, Eric and Laura moved to Vermont where Eric began work at the Vermont Forensic Laboratory in Waterbury, VT. Eric and Laura settled in Middlesex, where they raised their two children, Keith and Gwen.

Eric enjoyed a long career at the Forensic Laboratory, where he served as the director for 13 years. During his time at the lab, Eric was instrumental in providing expertise for the construction and passing of the Vermont DNA databank law, getting the lab accredited with the American Association of Crime Lab Directors, and overseeing the creation the new Forensic Lab, completed in 2010. Eric served on many boards and organizations during his time at the Forensic Lab and after his retirement in 2011, including the steering committee for the Green Mountain DNA Conference, the New York State Commission on Forensic Science DNA Subcommittee, and the STEM Challenge Initiative board of directors.

Eric was known most for his friendly, cheerful, thoughtful, and caring demeanor, serving as a support for those around him even through his own times of adversity. He served as a role model to his children and many others in his community, acting as a pillar of integrity, hard work, creativity, and positivity. Eric and his family often enjoyed trips to Lake Champlain, which inspired him and his wife to move to Alburgh to be closer to the lake once he retired.

He is survived by his wife Laura Lynn (Wheeler) Buel of Alburgh, his son Keith Buel of Burlington, and daughter Gwen Buel and her husband Jonathan Holdsworth of Frederick, Maryland. He is also survived by his sister Denise Brown, of Lyndonville; his aunt, Constance DiSabatino of Georgetown, Delaware; several nieces, nephews, and a cousin.

Visitation hours will be held on Wednesday, April 11th from 6-8pm at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St. in St. Albans. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 12th at 2pm at Christ Episcopal Church, 64 State St. in Montpelier.
