Obituary for Elizabeth M. Casavant

Elizabeth M. “Beth” Casavant St. Albans - Elizabeth M. “Beth” Casavant, 43, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, July 2, 2007 at Northwestern Medical Center with her loving family at her side following an illness of six months. She was born in St. Albans June 1, 1964, the daughter of Elizabeth (Norton) Casavant and the late Harlan P. Casavant, M.D. She was a 5th and 6th grade teacher at Highgate Elementary School for the past seven years. Prior to that she taught in Derby Line and Swanton for 13 years. Beth was a lifelong resident of St. Albans and a 1982 graduate of Bellows Free Academy. She graduated from the University of Vermont in 1986 where she later received her Masters Degree. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, a member of Champlain Country Club, Vermont State Teachers Association, Smugglers Notch Ski Club and the St. Albans Women’s Hockey League. She was a ski instructor and coach at Smugglers Notch and a coach for the “Youngblades” in the St. Albans Skating Association. Beth had an infectious smile. During the winter months you could count on Beth enjoying the first tracks on Smugglers Notch. In the summer she could be found flying around the lake, often towing one or more of her family members behind her on the jet ski or boat. If she wasn’t on the lake she could often be found on the golf course playing with several of her close friends. She loved all children and especially enjoyed her time with her nieces and nephew. She had a unique relationship with her niece Alex whom she worked diligently with to establish a solid educational foundation. She was always an educator no matter the situation and loved her students at Highgate Elementary School. Beth is survived by her mother, Elizabeth Casavant, of St. Albans, eight siblings; Anne and Gary Bluto of St. Albans, Mark Casavant of Swanton, Kathleen and Craig Paradee of Fairfield, Martha and Darrin Ries of St. Albans, Karen Casavant of Northfield, Susan and Martin Magnan of Fairfield, John and Sandra Casavant of St. Albans and Thomas Casavant of Alburgh. She also leaves her beloved nieces and nephew: Johanna and Jill Paradee, Zachary Ries, Elizabeth and Sarah Magnan and Alex, Emma, Anna and Georgia Casavant. She also leaves an aunt and uncle, Christine and Robert Schafer of Cape Cod, many cousins, dear friends, and colleagues. She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Harlan P. Casavant on June 26, 1976 and her grandparents: Perley and Olive Casavant and Claude and Anna Norton. Beth’s family wishes to thank the extraordinary staff at Northwestern Medical Center, Drs Denis Saunders and Tom Roland and their staffs, Dr Joe Salomone, Dr Terri Neilson and her friend Dr Elisabeth Fontaine. The family is very appreciative of the outstanding care she received from the nursing staff at NMC. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 6th at 11:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Reverend André Houle, Pastor, as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Casavant family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. and 7:00 to 9:00 P.M.
