St. Albans – Elizabeth H. Corliss, 94, a lifelong resident of this area passed away unexpectedly Wednesday March 9, 2011, shortly after arriving at the Northwestern Medical Center. Born on August 2, 1916, in Swanton, Betty was a daughter of the late Gaylord and Lois (Beals) Corliss. Betty graduated from Johnson Normal School and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from University of Vermont. She then taught in the St. Albans City School system for more than 40 years. The classes she taught were first and fifth grades. Betty was a very active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, serving on several church boards. She also volunteered with the St. Albans Historical Society, Vermont Cancer Society and Northwestern Medical Center. She was a member of the Franklin County Senior Center, Vermont Historical Society, Green Mountain Club and Vermont Retired Teachers Association. She also sponsored Fresh Air children from New York. Together she and her late brother, Bob, walked the Long Trail through Vermont. Survivors include eight nieces and nephews;twelve great nieces and nephews and their families and a brother-in-law. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Robert B. Corliss on June 26, 2001; sisters, Anita Fry, Hazel Lillian Corliss and Edith B. Morrison. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Friday, March 11, 2011, from 4 to 6 PM in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 12th at 11:00 A.M. in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Church Street. Interment will follow in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery in Swanton.
