Obituary for Edmund D. Steele

St. Albans – St. Albans has lost one of its finest citizens. Edmund D. Steele, a resident of St. Albans for the past sixty-four years died Friday, March 27, 2009, at the Franklin County Rehab Center, following a brief illness. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, January 15, 1911, the son of the late Charles W. and Charlotte (Lincoln) Steele. Edmund graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1928. He then attended Middlebury College in 1928 and 1929. He moved to New York City and was employed at National City Bank from 1930 to 1937. While he was employed at the bank, he attended and graduated from New York University, School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance in 1935. The same year he married Dorothy M. Crowe of St. Johnsbury after her graduation from Middlebury College. They lived in New York City until 1937, when they returned to St. Johnsbury. Edmund then was employed by Vermont Savings Bank in Brattleboro and Chester Offices from 1938 to 1945. Edmund and Dorothy moved to St. Albans in 1945, where Edmund took a position at the Franklin County Bank (now known at TD Banknorth), where he remained until his retirement in 1976. He then served on the Board of Directors as a Director and Chairman, Investment and Trust Committee until 1981. Throughout his career, Edmund was a dedicated and well respected banker. Edmund served as a Trustee and Director of many organizations including, St. Albans Rotary, King’s Daughters Home, The Warner Home for Little Wanderers, Vermont Congregational Homes, (Atkinson Residence in Newbury), First Congregational Church of St. Albans, United Church of Christ Conference, American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, St. Albans Historical Society, Rowland E. Robinson Memorial Association (Ferrisburg), Vermont Historical Society and Auto Club of Vermont (AAA). Edmund was named St. Albans Rotary Man of the Year in 2000. He was also a member of Franklin Lodge # 4, F&AM. Edmund had many interests and hobbies including, Vermont 251 Club, photography and bowling. Edmund was a lover and collector of all types of books, especially Civil War and Vermont history. With other local citizens, Edmund and his wife, Dorothy, were instrumental in creating the St. Albans Historical Society. Edmund devoted countless hours to the museum for many years. Edmund is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, George and Dianne Steele of St. Albans Town; his grandson, Jason Steele and his wife, Betty, of Chandler, Arizona; his grandson, Jeffrey Steele and his wife, Jenifer, of St. Albans Town; his great granddaughter, Ava Steele of Chandler, Arizona; his sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Steele of Shelburne; a special niece, Mary Tromba of Manchester, New Hampshire and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, his sisters, Helen Thistle and Eleanor Steele; his twin brother, John Steele and brother, Wesley Steele as well as his sister-in-law, Marguerite Steele. The family would like to thank Ann Noel and Norma Gratton who provided Edmund kind and gentle care at home. We also thank the wonderful staff at the Franklin County Home Health for the many years of devoted care. Without their care and support, Edmund would not have been able to remain at home until the time of his death. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. in the First Congregational Church of St. Albans on the North end of Church Street. The Reverend Judy Steger Kennedy will officiate. Interment will be later this spring in the Steele family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Edmund’s family will receive friends on Monday, March 30, 2009, from 4:30 to 8:30 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.
