Obituary for E. Marguerite Mary (Carney) Marchessault

ST. ALBANS – E. Marguerite Mary (Carney) Marchessault, 104, died peacefully Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at the Franklin County Rehabilitation Center.

Marguerite (Meg) was born on November 13, 1911, in Durand, MI, the daughter of the late Dr. Edward and Elizabeth Carney. She married St. Albans native Warren Marchessault in 1939, who predeceased her in 1971. Meg’s late sister, Winona (Wyn), was married to Warren’s brother, the late Arthur Marchessault of St. Albans. For many years, Meg and Warren lived and worked in New York City with their five children.

Following the deaths of Warren and Arthur, Meg and Wyn spent winters together with their late brother, Edward Carney, and his wife Agnes, in Stuart, FL, and summers in St. Albans at Hathaway Point, where the family has owned cottages since the 1940s. The pair traveled extensively to visit family and see the world prior to Wyn’s death in 2000. Meg maintained a strong life-long Catholic faith and enjoyed painting, quilting, reading, and spending time with the family pets. She could often be found at the window of her cottage at Hathaway Point, gazing at the lake and waving to boating neighbors. She cherished her time there and was passionate in her love of St. Albans, inspiring several in her family to make the town their permanent home.

Meg was a registered nurse (Providence Hospital School of Nursing, 1933), a longtime hospice volunteer, and a hospital chaplain and found great joy for herself in comforting patients during their time of need. At the end of her life, her devoted family and the dedicated and caring staff at both Franklin County Rehabilitation and the Homestead assisted living facility in St. Albans were able to do the same for her. There, she continued to charm all who were privileged to meet her, checking in on her fellow residents during meals and joining in on musical programs, singing every song and clapping to the music at the age of 104.

She will be greatly missed by her large family, many friends and neighbors, including her network of caregivers to whom she became very close.

Meg is survived by her children: Susan (Marchessault) Lewis of North Syracuse, NY; Art Marchessault of St. Albans, Mary (Marchessault) and Mel Schursky of Lindenhurst, NY; Thomas and Eileen Marchessault of Manchester, CT; and Jim and Sue Marchessault of Canby, CA. She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia, who died in infancy. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Barbara Lewis, Jennifer Lewis and family, Warren and Annie Marchessault, Ruth and Ed Isaacson, Helen and Bruce Rose and family, Sam and Kelly Schursky and family, Mel and Sonia Schursky and family, Frank and Marissa Schursky, Jack Schursky, Beth Marchessault, Matt Marchessault, Donna Marchessault, Judah and Jessica Marchessault and family, Sara Marchessault, David and Christine Marchessault and family, and Tim Marchessault and family. Her many nieces, nephews, and friends will lovingly remember her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. in Holy Angels Catholic Church, 245 Lake Street followed by interment in the family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to her nephew, Ned Marchessault’s Spiritan Mission in Olbalbal, Tanzania at www.nedsmission.org or made out to Edward Marchessault with a memo to Olbalbal Mission and sent to Martha Stovall at 15 Litchfield Road, Port Washington, NY 11050.
