Obituary for Dorothy Duffus Best
New Haven/St. Albans Bay – Dorothy Duffus Best, 90, a longtime resident of St. Albans Bay passed on Saturday, July 2nd at the home of her son Jay, JR in New Haven with her family by her side. Born on December 20, 1920, in Ludlow, Massachusetts, Dorothy was the youngest of nine children of James and Agnes (McRobbie) Duffus. Dorothy graduated from the High School of Commerce in Springfield, Massachusetts. She was first employed in the tabulating department of the Monsanto Chemical Company. She was also very active as a volunteer with her sister (Helena) for the American Red Cross. On March 31, 1945, she married Jay William Best, SR. After moving to St. Albans Bay, Vermont Dorothy worked for many years as a bulk mail carrier. She then decided to spend the next several years in what was her favorite career as homemaker and mother. She later returned to the outside workforce in the accounts payable department at Fonda Container in St. Albans. Dorothy was a member of the St. Albans Bay Methodist Church. She participated in the church choir and served on various committees and fund-raising events. Dorothy’s survivors include her children: Jay Best, JR. and his wife Georgia of New Haven, Susan Best of Derby Line, Nancy Garey of Georgia, and Christine Best of Swanton. Dorothy is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Heather, Hannah, Jessica, Elizabeth, Bryan, David, Jennifer, and Mark. She also had three great grandchildren (Emma, Carlisle, and Channing) as well as several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Jay SR on August 31, 2010, her son, David Best on September 10, 1972, and her seven sisters and brother. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday July 13th at 11:00 A.M. at the St. Albans Bay Methodist Church. The Reverend Elizabeth Griffin will officiate. Following the service, Dorothy’s family will receive friends in the fellowship hall. Interment will be in the Best family lot at the St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Dorothy was very appreciative of the outstanding care that she received during her last 12 months from the medical and special needs aides from Addison County Home Health and Hospice and the Partners in Palliative & Home Care.
