St. Albans - Daniel Capistrano Pinon, 77, departed from this life on Thursday, April 2, 2015, at UVMC in Burlington with his family and pastor at his side. Dan was affectionately known to his friends as, “Pineapple” and for making Hawaiian shirts a fashion statement in northern Vermont. Born on May 11, 1937, he was the son of the late Ramon and Pastora (Capistrano) Pinon in Manila, Philippines. As a child during World War II, Dan helped U.S. soldiers locate enemy soldiers in the Philippine Islands. In later years, he was recognized for this by being made an honorary member of the VFW. Dan immigrated to the United States in the late 1950’s and settled in New Jersey where he worked in various jobs including: Assembler at Kodak, private detective, auto mechanic, and truck driver. In the early 70’s Dan moved to northern Vermont where he settled for the remainder of his life. He helped start the first volunteer ambulance squad in Sheldon Springs, Vermont. He was employed for twenty years at the former Boise Cascade Paper Mill in Sheldon Springs, retiring in 1992. He then was employed at Silhouette Tone in St. Albans until his Parkinson’s disease forced him to retire in 2005. He was an active member and former Deacon of the Swanton Christian Church where he loved to play his bass guitar during the church worship service. In addition to his wife, Juanita “Tina” Lee (Demar) Pinon, Dan leaves nine children. Dennis Pinon and wife, Amy, Christina Bouwens and husband, James, Rita Stafford and husband, Glen, Kimberly Benson and husband, Paul, Deborah Hiland and husband, Doug, Tamara Pena and husband, Hank, Matthew Stypa and wife, Susan, Todd Unwin and companion, Lynn and Brenda Unwin and companion, Shawn. He also leaves his sister, Lourdes “Lulu” Heller, 18 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Dan’s life will be held Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 3:00 PM at the Swanton Christian Church on Academy St. in Swanton, VT with Pastor Dan Brueckner, officiating. The church family will host a reception for family and friends in the fellowship hall immediately following. Interment will be in St. Albans Bay Cemetery at a later date. Any flowers should be sent for delivery at the church Saturday – April 11, 2015, prior to the celebration service.
