Barre - Craig S. Sweeny, a resident of Barre Town, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014, following a long period of decline, at his home at the age of 61. His mate, Bob Smutek, was at his side. He will be remembered as a kind and gentle man who lived his life to the fullest despite his disability. He was particularly attached to his Pomeranian dogs, Quentin, Elvira and Hannah, who wanted for nothing. He traveled frequently, including trips to Europe, Mexico, and around the country, completed a first draft of a novel and spent all possible time and attention to develop his family genealogy. The genealogy project took decades of research and documentation, achieving a comprehensive family tree and while doing so was able to contact and exchange information with his large extended family. Born in St. Albans, July 28, 1952, he was the son of the late Howard Sweeny, D.V.M. and Jacquelyn (Nelson) Sweeny both originally from St. Albans. He graduated from Spaulding High School, Barre, VT in 1970 and from the New England School of Art, Boston, MA with a degree in Environmental Design in 1974. Craig enjoyed a career as an interior designer in the Boston area from 1974 until his retirement. In 1992 he met Bob Smutek and they became life partners prior to moving to Barre, VT in 2001. While living and working in Boston, he developed many close professional and personal friendships and enjoyed many of the social and recreational activities offered by that city. After moving back to Vermont, he was able to rekindle relationships with his family here. Most notable among his many cousins here in Vermont, is his cousin Pamela Ellis with whom he spent many enjoyable times conversing, playing board games, and just being together. In addition to his life partner, Bob, he is survived by his three brothers, Bruce of West Glover, VT with his wife Susan, Gregory of Schaumburg, IL, and his twin brother Chris of Tallahassee, FL. The family is planning a private interment service for family and close friends at a future date to be decided. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Vermont Humane Society, 1589 VT Rte 14S, E. Montpelier, VT 05651, (802) 476-3811. Arrangements are by Rett Heald and staff of the Heald Funeral Home where online messages of condolence may be sent to www.healdfuneralhome.com.
