Charles H. Longley Sheldon - Charles H. Longley, 88, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away early Saturday morning, August 25, 2007, in Haven Health Care where he had resided since 2005 following a stroke. He was born in Montgomery, VT, May 24, 1919, the son of the late Frank and Ila (Brown) Longley. On November 7, 1942, Charles married Harriet R. Jenne in Enosburg Falls. Harriet died July 13, 2004 after 61 years of marriage. Charles had worked on farms for a number of years, and then he and Harriet owned and operated a dairy farm in Fairfield for fourteen years. After leaving the farm, he worked on his own and for various contractors doing carpentry until his retirement. Charles was an avid hunter, bagging many bucks during his lifetime, the last one in November of 2004, at the age of 85. He loved to talk about hunting. He also enjoyed fishing, working on antique tractors, sugaring with his grandson and his vegetable garden. He liked picking and eating berries, especially strawberries and blueberries. He also enjoyed watching westerns on TV, reading western stories and doing jigsaw puzzles. He will be remembered for teasing the nurses at Haven Health and anyone else who crossed his path. Survivors include his daughter, Charlene Gross and her husband, John, of Sheldon, two grandchildren; Emily Laplant and Jonathan Gross, three great grandchildren; Charles, Stetson and Rhiannon Garey all of Sheldon. He also leaves two sisters, Eunice Messier of Richford and Joyce Marcy of Berkshire, VT, four sisters-in-law; Bernice Longley of Enosburg Falls, Eudora Longley of Windsor, VT, Margaret Ploof of St. Albans, and Kathleen Gagne and her husband, Denis of Highgate Ctr., and a brother-in-law, Dorwin Jenne of Virginia as well as many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers and their spouses, Raymond and Ellen Longley, Thayer and Marguerite Longley, Cedric Longley, Clarence and Bertha Longley and Leonard Longley, also his sisters and their spouses; Blanche and Barney Malone, Sr., Beatrice and Richard Malone, Hildred and Frederick Greenwood and Mearle Longley, and a brother-in-law, Oscar Ploof. Charles’ family would like to thank the staff at Haven Health Care for the wonderful care he received during his stay. In keeping with Charles' wishes, funeral services will be private and at the convenience of his family. Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans is assisting with arrangements.
