Obituary for Charles Edward Luneau

St. Albans – Charles Edward Luneau, 87, a resident of this area since 1931, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2012, his sixty-sixth wedding anniversary, at the Franklin County Rehab Center in St. Albans, VT, with his loving family at his side. Born on September 2, 1924, in St. Remi-de-Tingwick, Quebec, he was the son of the late Joseph and Laura (St. Cyr) Luneau. On May 26, 1946, at Holy Angels Church, in St. Albans, Charles married Jacqueline Montagne, who preceded him in death on June 13, 1987. Charles attended the former Bell School (corner of Lower Newton and Dunsmore Road), Holy Angels Grammar School and Bellows Free Academy. He retired in 1982 after 39 years of service to the Central Vermont Railroad. Charles was member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, the United Brotherhood of Trainmen, Central Vermont Railway Historical Society, Knights of Columbus, Council 297 and former Town of St. Albans Lister. He enjoyed his service to his community and was proud to do his part. He was avid hunter, enjoyed fishing in Canada, ice fishing on Lake Champlain, playing golf, skiing, tending his garden and a good game of cribbage. Charles was a well-informed, gentle man of admirable character who prided himself on never missing a vote. He was a patient, non-judgmental, and supportive father always ready to help in every way he could. “Pip” was a loyal grandfather who supported his grandchildren at countless Little League and Babe Ruth baseball games, annual dance recitals and numerous milestone events. Charles became a credible cook and his family enjoyed his pea soup and apple pie. Survivors include his children, Louise and Jon Haynes of St. Albans, VT and their family, Stephanie Ross Cleary and her family, Katie, Molly, and Silas of Sheldon, VT, Allison Haynes and Kenneth Colbert and their son, Alex, of Albuquerque, NM, Richard and Kerrie Ross and their sons, Nicholas and Ian of Berkshire, VT, Nora and Patrick Garrity and their daughter, Mae, of New York City, and Hillary Haynes and her fiancé, Daniel Fisher, of Bondsville, MA; Daniel and Karen Luneau of St. Albans, VT and their family, Joseph and Margaux Luneau and their sons, Charles and Samuel of St. Albans, VT, Peter Luneau and Annie Waltz and their daughters, Faye and Marie, of Astoria, NY, and Adam Luneau of St. Albans, VT; Marc and Patrice Luneau of Walden, VT and their family, Lindsey and Frank Gelormini of Bridgewater, NJ, Ashley Luneau of Morrisville, VT and Taylor Luneau of Walden, VT; and Paul and Laura Luneau of Jeffersonville, VT and their family, Jason Luneau of Jeffersonville, VT and Emily and Jesse Hanley, of Waterville, VT. Charles is also survived by his sisters and brothers and their spouses, Aura Paquette of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, Rose Rixon of St. Albans, VT, Mary Jean and David Wulftange of Santa Inez, CA, Clara and Rene Demers of Berkshire, VT and Deland, FL, and Roger and Carol Luneau of St. Albans, VT; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Eleanor Luneau of Richford, VT, Bette Montagne of St. Albans, VT, Francis and Annette Montagne of St. Albans Town, VT, Suzanne and Peter Spillane of Scituate, MA, Pauline and Patrick Hogan of St. Albans, VT, Claudette and Michael Kilduff of Bedford, NH and Punta Gorda, FL, and Gabrielle and Stephen Johnson of Peoria, AZ, and many, many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Charles was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Eva (Richer) Montagne, his brothers, Evariste and Raymond Luneau, and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leonard Paquette, Gerard Smith, John Rixon, Edgar and Lillian Thibault, John and Simone Montagne, Andre and Jeanne Moreau, Paul and Mardie Montagne, Joffre and Simone Montage, Joffre and Charlotte Nadeau, Cecile Montagne, Marcel and Elizabeth Montagne, Jacques Montagne, Edwin and Madeleine Shepard and Roger Montagne. Charles’ family extends sincere thanks to the past and present staff at the Franklin County Rehab Center for their expert and compassionate care of our father during his stay. The family also recognizes Ted Yandow for his faithful ministering to Dad. And to our Aunt Rose Rixon, our heartfelt gratitude for her loyal visits to Dad and for all the loving support she gave us during this past week. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday May 31 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church on Fairfield Street. Interment will follow in the family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Those wishing to honor Charles’ memory are asked to contribute to Charles E.
