Obituary for Catherine Eva Lawyer

St. Albans – Catherine Eva Lawyer left this world peacefully on January 16, 2009, in her own home. She spent the last days of her life surrounded by her loving family, friends and caregivers enjoying the laughter, tears and music. Catherine known to those as Ma, Kay, Aunt Katy or Grammy Kay, was born in Winooski, Vermont on August 19th, 1925, the daughter of Maurice and Della (Gravel) Dubrule. She married James C. Lawyer on June 15th, 1946, and together they raised their five children. Her husband James predeceased her on January 1st, 1970. Catherine then met the other love of her life George D. Hakey, and spent twenty-nine years wonderful years of her life with him. He predeceased her in 1998. Catherine worked at the Union Carbide for twenty-seven years and was notorious for writing her special poems and factory jokes. She loved music and was known to many as the “Stick Lady” who accompanied many bands with her musical stick that only she could play. Catherine loved spending summers at Lake Carmi at “the trailer” with George and her dogs and especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. Catherine leaves her love and memories with her son, Tom and his wife, Kelly; daughter Sally; son, John and his wife, Patrice; son, Timmy and his companion, Jean Viens and son, David and his companion, Kay Durenleau. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Stacie and Jeff Rouleau and their children, Dyllon, Noah, Chloe and Lyla; Jamie Lawyer, Jason Lawyer, Krista Florio and her children, Alyssa and Dominick and Jesse Lawyer. Catherine also leaves her sister, Ramona Giroux and her husband, Victor, a brother, Bobby and his companion Kathy, sister-in-law, Louise Dubrule and many special nieces, nephews, cousins and very dear and special friends, Marie Bourdeau Jeannie Renaudette, Liza Bray, Jessie Firkey and Sarah Vestor. Catherine was predeceased by an infant daughter, her parents, her brother, Maurice Dubrule, her grandson, Christopher “Kippy” Rock and grandson, Jeremy Lawyer. Catherine and her family would especially like to thank the many agencies and people who provided not only care, but love during the last part of her life. Thank you to Franklin County Home Health, especially Annette Blanchard and the Hospice Group, the nurses, friends, and much loved afternoon caregivers. Care Partners loving and caring staff who gave Catherine so much love and support. Dr, Hamill, Jean Baker,RN, the Northwestern Medical Center staff, loving nurses on the Med/Surg Unit, the Emergency Room staff and the wonderful support of Martha Deslauriers, Sandy Chcoine and Nilda Gonnella French. Dr.Rahaki and Dr. Silverstein, a special thank you to Dr. Cochran for his kind and gentle manner and making it possible for our mother to spend her last days at home with her loved ones as she so wanted. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. in Holy Angels Catholic Church on Lake Street with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy as celebrant. Catherine’s family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to APDA VT.
