St. Albans - Catherine Clapp Read, 61, passed away peacefully after a courageous year-long battle against cancer, Feb. 22, 2014, surrounded by family and friends. She was born October 18, 1952, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Nancy and Russell Clapp of Fairfield County, Conn. Cathy graduated from Greens Farm Academy of Westport, and attended college at Bennett College, in Millbrook, N.Y., and the University of Colorado, Boulder. In 1974 she was introduced to her future husband, Jeremy, by a former college class mate of his, who hired her for an advertising position at the Colorado Daily newspaper. On October 16, 1982, Cathy and Jeremy were married at Trinity Church, Southport, Conn. They would honeymoon in Vermont, and 5 years later would move to Vermont. Preceding that move, on September 1, 1985, their son Geoffrey was born in Boulder and all moved to California. After their arrival in St. Albans, Cathy dedicated her time to the St. Albans Free Library as a member of the staff. She lent her energies to NMC's "Cardiac Capers" productions, the holiday's "Operation Happiness", and at one time Burlington's Flynn Theatre. Cathy will be remembered for her engaging smile, her generosity with friendship, her indomitable spirit, and her love of family. Ever the protector of stray animals, Cathy offered aid and comfort to those roamers who ventured through her property. Besides her husband, Jeremy Read, and son, Geoffrey Read of Winooski, VT, Cathy leaves her brother, Dr. Doug Clapp of Cincinnati, Ohio, and her sister, Pam Hatfield of Palm Beach, FL, sister-in-laws Dr. Jennifer Read of Rockville, Maryland, and Charlotte Read-Braman of San Francisco. Cathy and Jeremy, and later Geoffrey enjoyed several concerts together over the years, Cathy's last concert she attended was performed by one of her favorite performers, Barbra Streisand. At her request there will be no funeral service. However a celebration of her life will be held, Sunday, March 23; 2 - 4 PM, at the American Legion Hall, St. Albans. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations, in Cathy's memory, for the Wellness Massage Center, 164 N. Main St., St. Albans, or the St. Albans Free Library, 11 Maiden Lane, St. Albans, Vt. - 05478. The Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans is making the necessary funeral arrangements.
