Obituary for Burton L. "Burt" Cross

St. Albans – Burton L. Cross, a lifelong area resident passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, May 5th, 2018, at the Northwestern Medical Center, with his family at his side.

Born at home in Georgia, on March 25th, 1929, he was the son of the late Andrew and Florence (Burnor) Cross. Burt was 89 years old.

On April 8th, 1951, in St. Albans, he married Virginia Richards, who survives him.

Burt served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he began a 40 year career with District #8 of the Vermont State Highway Department retiring in 1991. He then worked for his son-in-law at Ray Trombley Excavating.

Burt was an active member of Robert E. Gladden Post #758, Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he was a Past Commander and member of Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion. He was an active member and attended many funerals serving on the Funeral Honors Detail from the VFW and American Legion.

He enjoyed being with his family, hunting, fishing, traveling to Alaska with Ginny and was especially proud of his garden. He and son, Jim, made several trips to Alaska panning for gold. He also was a member of the St. Albans Amateur Radio Club.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Virginia, of St. Albans; their children, Patsy Trombley and her husband, Ray, of Swanton and Jim Cross and his wife, Yvette, of Swanton, as well as his grandchildren, Travis Rushford, Trevor Rushford and his wife, Sunny-Lyn, Courtney Kumes and her husband, Capt. Tom Kumes, Capt. Thomas Cross and his wife, Heather Cross, Esq., Caitlin Andra RN and her husband, Harley Andra, RN, and Rebecca Cross, EIT and her special friend, Bradley Remillard. Burt is also survived by his great-grandchildren Cody Rushford, Kolton Rushford and Chloe and Gavin Rushford and great great-grandson, Brayden Rushford.

Burt also leaves his siblings, Lynwood Cross and his wife, Janice, of St. Albans, Charles Cross and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Swanton, Francis Cross of Swanton, Shirley Miller of St. Albans and Marie Bombardier and her husband, Al, of Essex; many nieces and nephews and special friends, Reginald Johnson, Shirley Phillips and Donald Conn.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Clayton, Ronald, Robert and Marion.

Burt’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 9th, 2018, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 10th, 2018, at 1:30 PM at Holy Angels Church, 245 Lake Street, St. Albans. Interment with Military Funeral Honors will follow at the Georgia Plain Cemetery.
