Obituary for Bernadette Cecile DeMarinis

St. Albans: Bernadette Cecile (Fregeau) DeMarinis, 91, Passed away Sunday morning, November 8, 2009 at Northwestern Medical Center. Her loving family was at her side. The daughter of Alice (Smith) and Ferdinand “Fred” Fregeau she was born Dec. 19, 1917 in Clarenceville, Quebec. At age five, she moved with her family to St. Albans, VT where she attended Holy Angels School. During her teens and early twenties, she worked for many local families doing housekeeping and babysitting. She was one of the first five women to work at Fonda Container in 1942. She worked there until 1945 when she married Arthur DeMarinis on June 28th upon his return from a thirty-three month stay in the South Pacific. She returned to work at Fonda Container for a short time then stayed home to care for her family until the late 1950s when she returned to Fonda Container until Arthur had a heart attack in 1974. At that time she started working in the family business, Boston Tailoring & Cleaners. She worked along with Arthur until his death in 1974. She then continued to run the business with her son, John, until her retirement in 1983 although she continued to keep a hand in the business until 2004. She was a member of The Ladies of St. Anne, Court St. Mary Order 468 Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Robert E. Glidden Post 758 VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Bernadette was a self-taught, hardworking, inspiring lady who always put family first. She had a gift for looking after and taking care of elderly people who needed assistance which she did until her own health did not allow her to continue. Bernadette also was an avid reader although failing eyesight caused her to rely on talking books the last year which she enjoyed as well. Some of her regular enjoyments were watching daily Mass, her stories, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and collecting bells that number in the hundreds. Her determination and stubbornness allowed her to remain in her own home alone until just 2 weeks ago at which time she went to Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford. She cherished her grandchildren and her great grandchildren who often received a little something from Grandma each time they visited. Survivors include her daughter, Joan, and her husband, Michael Leduc, of Swanton; her son, John, and his wife, Sandy, of St. Albans; three grandchildren: Todd Leduc and his wife, Michelle, of St. Albans; Michelle Leduc and her friend, Chris Coutois, of Sheldon; and Jennifer (DeMarinis) and her husband, Nick Merit, of Fletcher; five great grandchildren: Ashleigh, Bethany and Cassidy Leduc of St. Albans; Kyler Leduc of Sheldon; Marianna Merit of Fletcher and an expected baby in May; a sister, MayAnn LaMay, of Richford and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, on March 23, 1974; an infant daughter, Elaine, on August 15, 1951; brothers – Bernard, Rosaire and Roland Fregeau. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009 at 10:00 AM in Holy Angels Church, Lake St., St. Albans with interment following in Holy Cross Cemetery.
