Obituary for Beatrice Martha Woodward
Montgomery Center, VT - Beatrice Martha Woodward was known affectionately as Bea or BB. On Saturday, 28 June, 2014, Bea ended her thirty-year, brave battle with mental illness. She was born in Newport, VT on December 26, 1967, and spent much of her childhood in Montgomery Center, VT. She died in Greensboro, NC. Bea was a beautiful, vivacious child who sang TV commercial jingles and memorized Gray’s Anatomy for fun while tagging along behind her older siblings. She was highly intelligent and gifted in many ways. Even after her illness became a significant force in her life in her mid-teen years, Bea continued to rank highly throughout her academic career. She graduated, a Vermont Scholar, from Lamoille Union High School, Hyde Park, VT, in 1985; earned, cum laude, her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Vermont in 1990, her Master of Public Health, Boston University School of Public Health, Boston in 1997, and in just the last few years, her RN degree, summa cum laude, at Massachusetts Bay Community College. To Bea, the most important title she earned was that of “Auntie Bea.” She passionately adored her nieces and nephews and they made her very happy. She loved and protected her kitties, Isabella and Thomathy, like a mama. Bea worked so hard to be a good friend, to continue learning, to find contentment. She had a very strong sense of justice and would always stand for the vulnerable. Her family is forever grateful to all Bea’s friends who have been so supportive of her always and, especially in recent months, to Donna Rooney of Cambridge, VT and Nicole Halbig Kedrick of Wake Forest, NC. The Moonis family, Mariyam, Majaz, and Zohaib Moonis, of Shrewbury, MA, you have our hearts always for the decades you so unconditionally loved Bea and gave her a place in your lovely family. You made her happy and gave her safe haven. It wasn’t always easy to be with Bea on her journey, but none of us would have done any less. We loved her. There are many good memories. Her sweet kitties were taken in by gentle volunteers at the SPCA of the Triad, a private and volunteer-run organization in Greensboro, NC. They care for abandoned and orphaned cats and dogs until they find permanent homes. Bea would have loved what this organization does and the volunteers who do it with such heart. We ask that any gifts in Bea’s name be made to them at SPCA of the Triad, 3163 Hines Chapel Road, NC 27405 or A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 10th beginning at 4:00PM at the Historical Society in Montgomery Village, VT. Bea leaves her loving mom, Patricia Woodward, now of St Albans, VT; her siblings Philip Woodard and his wife, Jennifer of Burlington, VT; Richard Woodward of San Francisco; Deb Loughlin and her husband, Steve, of St. Albans; Becky Woodward of Atlanta, GA; Elizabeth Woodward and partner, Jim McLachlan, of Ottawa; Steve Woodward and partner, Michelle Edge, of Auckland, New Zealand. She has many nieces and nephews, but was especially close to Alexandria Loughlin of Auckland, New Zealand; Sydny Loughlin of St. Albans, VT; Nate Loughlin of St. Albans, VT; and Thomas Woodward of Burlington, VT. She was pre-deceased by her father Daniel E. Woodward of Montgomery, VT and brothers Daniel Woodward of Montreal and Michel Woodward of Saint-Hermenegilde, Quebec.
