Amory, Mississippi – Arthur Stephen Ashton, 79, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2015, at his home. Born on December 21, 1935, Sheldon, Vermont, he was the son of the late Robert and Dorothy Hemenway Ashton. Steve was a 1953 graduate of Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1962. He honorably served in the US Army from 1954-1956. From 1962-1991, Steve worked in financial services for Weyerhaeuser Company in Vermont, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, and Alabama. On April 15, 1988, he married Betty Sue McCarley. Guided by his faith in God, he was a member of Meadowood Baptist Church and enjoyed studying his Bible. Passionate about the Food Pantry, he frequently volunteered to work serving others. Steve enjoyed being with his family, helping others, piddling, playing golf, and Gospel music. Survivors include his wife of 27 years, daughter, Susan Reeves (Steve), Amory; sons, Stephen Arthur Ashton, Columbus, and Johnny Woodham, Aberdeen; also the mother of his children, Shirley Henderson Nickoles of Columbus, MS, brother, Robert E. Ashton (Paulita), St. Albans, sister, Margaret Montcalm (Joe), St. Albans, and 8 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Todd Michael Ashton. A funeral service was held at 2PM Saturday, July 11, 2015, at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory, with Dr. Lloyd Sweatt officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Sulligent. Pallbearers were his grandsons. Visitation was from 12- 1:45 PM, Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Amory Food Pantry, P.O. Box 64, Amory, MS or Meadowood Baptist Church, 1512 Hatley Road, Amory, MS 38821.
