Obituary for Arnold K. Underwood
Swanton – Arnold K. Underwood, 77, a lifelong resident of this area passed away early Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care with his family at his side. Born on November 9, 1933, at the home farm in Swanton, Arnold was the son of the late Edward and Stella (Lawyer) Underwood, Jr. On June 18, 1961, he married Elaine Tatro, who survives him. Arnold was a graduate of the former Swanton High School. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps and then returned to work the family farm with his wife, until they retired in 1996. He then worked for 9 years as caretaker of the Amtrak Station in St. Albans. Arnold was a member of Lakeside Grange and Past President of Vermont Farm Bureau. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Elaine of Swanton; two sons, Thomas C. Underwood and wife, Karen, of Swanton and Peter A. Underwood and wife, Tammy , of Swanton; his grandchildren, Kyle, Logan, Megan, Matthew and Caleb and a great-grandson due at Christmas and his sister, Joyce Graves and husband, Carlton, of Fairfield. Arnold is also survived by niece and nephews and their spouses, Lisa and Kerry Griswold, Leon and Amy Graves, Larry and Kathy Graves and Jeff and Carla Graves ; several cousins, many friends and his feline companions, Pumpkin and Storm. In addition to his parents, Arnold was preceded in death by a son, James Scott Underwood. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Sunday, August 7, 2011, from 2 to 4 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So Main Street, St. Albans. A funeral service will be held on Monday August 8th at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Church St with his nephew, the Reverend Larry Graves officiating. Interment with military honors will be held on Monday at 2:30 PM at the family lot in Riverside Cemetery in Swanton.
