Obituary for Arlene Driver Pearo

St. Albans – Arlene Driver Pearo, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away at Homestead-Pillsbury on March 28, 2015, where she had spent the last days of her life in the kind, loving care of Hospice, the staff at Homestead, and her friends and family. Born on February 4, 1926, in St. Albans, Vermont, she was the daughter of Frederick Worthy and May (Lawton) Driver. Arlene was 89 years old. Arlene spent her childhood in Chelsea, Vermont, beginning her education in a one-room schoolhouse and graduating from Chelsea High School as salutatorian in 1943. In 1946, she received her teaching degree from Johnson Normal School (Johnson State College) having studied in the accelerated program and serving as a demonstration teacher. She was an elementary school teacher for over 37 years, teaching in Strafford, Johnson, Sheldon, and then at Messenger Street, Fairfield Street, and City Elementary in St. Albans, Vermont. On June 10, 1949, she married Edward James Pearo, with whom she spent 55 wonderful years in St. Albans. Ed predeceased her in 2005. Arlene was a member of Chelsea West Hill Methodist Church, then after leaving Chelsea she had her membership transferred to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in St. Albans. She belonged to several church and school-related organizations including St. Paul’s United Methodist Women’s Circle, Women’s Mission, St. Paul’s Phi Alpha, Franklin County and Vermont Retired Teachers’ Associations, and Franklin County Senior Center. She also enjoyed her time as a volunteer at the St. Albans City Library Book Cellar. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by all of her siblings: Mary Driver, Beatrice Coburn, Henrietta Driver, Kathleen Williams, Jessie Cleveland, Gladys Reed, Doris Sweet, Edith Moxley, Marion Jones, Joseph Driver, Frederick Driver, and Arthur Driver. Arlene is survived by her children, Edward and his wife, Laurie (Palmer) Pearo, and her daughter, Linda Keating and her husband, Mark Skelding. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Lucy Pearo, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans, Vermont. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 2nd at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 11 Church Street, St. Albans, Vermont with Reverend Megan Stowe officiating. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Interment will take place in late spring in the family lot at St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Arlene’s family would like to thank Dr. Sanders and the staff at Champlain Valley Hematology Oncology, Dr. Juan Carlos Nunez, Franklin County Home Health and Hospice, and the staff of Homestead-Pillsbury.
