Obituary for Allen W. "Smiley" Church

St. Albans – Allen William “Smiley” Church left his family and friends peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2014, with his loving family at his side. Born in St. Albans on October 17, 1924, he was the son of the late Lynn Stanley and Olive (Abare) Church. Allen was 89 years old. Smiley was always singing and laughing. He was known for all of his hard work and he always took pride in all that he did. He worked for the former Central Vermont Railroad, Vermont Gas, City of St. Albans and for Lareau Plumbing and Heating. He was also caretaker for many years at Mount Calvary Cemetery. He was a former member of the Eagles Club, Aerie - No 1205 and a life member of Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1090. He enjoyed ice fishing, playing cards with family and friend, was known by many as “Mr Fix It" and his greatest pleasure was spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly. Survivors include his 7 children, Gloria Sweet and husband, Robert, of Sheldon, June White and fiancé, Julian Laroche, of St. Albans, Almon Church and his companion, Brenda Marcoux, of Berkshire, Jacqueline Richer and husband, Charles, of Colchester, Debra Davidson and husband, Michael, of Groton, VT, Kip Church and his wife, Lyn, of Cassville MO, and Madonna Sparks and husband, Doyle, of Cassville, MO. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 8 great great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Smiley is also survived by 2 sisters-in-law, Mildred and Helen Church both of St. Albans and 2 very special people, Kathy Robtoy and Michael Clapper. Smiley now joins his family on the other side, his parents; his wife, Leoma Rose (Bluto) Church who passed away in December of 1962; 2 grandsons, David and Daniel Sweet and 1 great grandson, Joseph Sweet; his 3 brothers, Herbert Church and his wife, Jenny, Howard and Arnold Church; his sister, Frances “Peggy” Burnor and her husband, Durwood, and 2 special friends, Beatrice Clapper and Janet Poquette. His family is forever grateful to the entire staff at St. Albans Healthcare & Rehab Center for their loving care and heartwarming support, it will never be forgotten. Also we wish to thank Franklin County Home Health for providing hospice care during his final days. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, from 6-8 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A funeral service will be held on Thursday June 26th at 11:00 A.M. in the Heald Chapel with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy officiating.
