Obituary for Albin J. Sonski

Bakersfield – Albin J. Sonski, 86, a resident of this community since September of 2006, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2011, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care with his family at his side following a brief illness. Born on February 10, 1925, in Somersville, Connecticut, Albin was the son of the late Longin and Antonia (Margelute) Sonski. He was a 50 year resident of Bloomfield, Connecticut before his move to Vermont. On August 20, 1949, Albin married Anne Vargo. They were married for 60 years until Anne’s death on November 16, 2009. Albin enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1945 and served four years of active duty. He later served twenty-four years in the reserve component with the 905th Military Airlift Group at Westover Air Force Base. Following 28 years of military service, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonial in the Air Force Reserves. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Connecticut in 1950. Albin, along with his brothers, Alex and Peter, formed Sonski Brothers Inc. in 1949. Together they built dozens of homes throughout Bloomfield and West Hartford, CT. He was later employed for the Town of Glastonbury in the Public Works Department, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church until his departure in 2006. Albin was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Reserve Officer’s Association, Lawn Bowling Club and the Military Officers Association. He enjoyed shad fishing with his son at the Enfield Dam and trout fishing at Mashapaug and West Hill Lake. He was a diehard fan of UCONN Basketball, especially the “Lady Huskies.” He was an avid letter writer and cheered for the Boston Red Sox. Survivors include his son, Albin, Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Kensington, CT; his daughters, Susan Sonski and her husband, Mark Doremus, of Bakersfield, VT and Lisa Stone and her husband, Ivan, of Bakersfield, VT, his grandchildren, Hillary Williams and husband, Ben of Fairfield, VT, Carrie (Kneese) Lawson of Brockton, MA and Staff Sargent James Stone and his wife, Melissa of Anchorage, AK and his great grandchildren, Bailey and Lyla Williams of Fairfield, VT. Albin is also survived by a brother, Alex Sonski and his wife, Susan (Howe) of Somersville, CT. In addition to his parents and his wife Anne, Albin was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Longin and Peter Sonski and a sister, Anna Legienza. A special thanks to Shirley Giffen and the staff of the Franklin County Home Health Agency. “We couldn’t have done it without you.” Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday April 7, 2011, from 4 to 7 PM at the Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 8th at 10:00 A.M. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bloomfield. Interment with full military honors will follow in the family lot in Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery.
