Obituary for Alan Joseph Barber

St. Albans – Alan a longtime resident passed away at his home on Saturday evening, February 27, 2016, with his loving family at his side.

He was born in St. Albans, on July 31st, 1933, the son of the late Edward and Dora (Babbie) Barber. He was 82 years old.

Alan graduated from St. Mary’s High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was a star player in all sports he played. He was a high scorer and a trophy winner. In later years, he turned his passion for sports to his golf passion. He traveled often to many golf courses in the US and Canada, as far away as in Japan with dignitaries while on assignments for the Marshall Service.

Alan served his country in the US Army as an MP from 1954-1956 in Germany, as a St. Albans City Police Officer from 1956-1959, resigning from the Police Dept to accept a position with the Department of Justice, as a US Deputy Marshall from 1959-1988. Alan received many awards for his expert pistol control.

Alan was a member of Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion, the Eagles Club in Milton and a 40+ year member of Champlain Country Club.

Alan is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sally Whitney Barber; his daughters, Alaine Hofland (Fred), Paula Green, Allison O’Neil (Scott) and pseudo daughter, Shan Reynolds (Aaron) , step-sons, Warren Whitney (Terri), Michael Whitney (Kimberly) and brother-in-law, Paul Napolitano (Rose) as well as 1 grandson, 10 granddaughters, 5 great-grandsons and 3 great-granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Edward Alan; sister, Colleen Rogerson (Chris); brother, John Barber (Mary Hance) and nephew, Peter Barber.

Alan’s family would like to thank his caregiver, Patti Judd, for the love, support and laughter she gave him and the great nurses of Franklin County Home Health Agency and Doctors, Teig Marco and Audrey Von Lepel.

Alan’s family will receive friends on Friday evening, March 4th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 5th at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 45 Fairfield St. Interment with military honors will take place later this spring at Holy Cross Cemetery.
