St. Albans – A. Raymond Benson, a lifelong resident of this area passed away Sunday, September 2, 2012, at his home with his loving family at his side. He was 86. Raymond was born on March 5, 1926, in Richford; he was the son of the late Albert J. and Alma Rose (Martel) Benson. Raymond served his country in the United States Navy and then worked for the State of Vermont as a Landfill Inspector and also was an artificial breeder for this area. For over forty years Raymond and Janice owned and operated the St. Albans House on Lake Street. He was a member of the Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion and Knights of Columbus, Council # 297. Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years, Janice Marie (Turner) Benson of St. Albans; their children, Albert J. Benson and his wife, Becky, of St. Albans, David Benson of St. Albans, Jane Zdziarski and her husband, Anthony, of St. Albans and Sheila Gregoire and her husband, Raymond, of Fairfield. Raymond is also survived by his grandchildren, Anthony and James Gregoire, Lisa Zdziarski, Kristina Brenner and her husband, Andrew, Raymond D. Benson and his great grandchildren, Shane Gregoire and James Gregoire, Jr, Lily Jane and Noah Brenner and Makayla Benson. In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by six sisters and five brothers. At his request there will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 7, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. in Holy Angels Catholic Church on Lake Street with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy as celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in the family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, Hospice Program, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vermont 05478 or the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, 434 Hurricane Lane Williston, Vermont 05495.
